The basic gist of it is the age old story that you probably cannot keep any planets or asteroids that you cannot defend yourself. That means that any group or company that wants to develop a colony on another planet had better bring along selfdefense equipment sufficient to protect their claim against invaders because the Earth governments will probably not assist in protecting them.

Elon Musk has proposed creating a new sustainable city on Mars for 80,000 hardy space pioneers. His Space X company is currently providing private transport service to the International Space Station in Earth orbit for NASA and he is thinking further out for his new goals. We definitely live in interesting times.
